Small Group Training vs Traditional Classes – What’s the Difference?

If you’re based in SawstonMeldreth, or the wider South Cambridgeshire area and you’re looking to build strength, fitness, and mobility in a motivating environment — you’ve probably come across plenty of group classes. But at Gymbo’s, we do things differently.

Our Small Group Training (SGT) service delivers the energy of a class along with expert coaching. It’s expertly designed to help you get stronger, fitter, and move better — without the chaos, guesswork, or lack of progression you might find on your own in a gym or a traditional class setting.

What Is Small Group Training?

Gymbo’s Small Group Training brings together up to 12 participants per session (6 at Meldreth). Each session is designed and led by a Level 3 qualified coach — not just a fitness instructor — and combines strength, cardiovascular, and functional training to deliver balanced, progressive results.

Unlike typical gym classes, our coaches don’t just perform the exercises at the front of the studio while you try to keep up. Instead, they:

  • Demonstrate and explain each exercise and training block at the start
  • Move between participants, providing hands-on coaching and motivation
  • Offer regressions or progressions based on your ability, fitness level, or any niggles/injuries
  • Ensure proper technique for both safety and performance

This means you’re not just following along — you’re being coached every step of the way.

How It Differs from Traditional Gym Classes

Traditional classes are often about numbers and energy — not individual progress. They’re typically run by Level 2 instructors who demonstrate from the front, while participants follow a one-size-fits-all routine with little to no feedback.

Here’s how Gymbo’s Small Group Training stands apart:

Why Small Group Training Works

  1. Real Coaching, Real Results
You’re not just copying an instructor — you’re being coached to move correctly, lift safely, and train effectively for lasting progress.
  2. More Variety & Engagement
Training on the gym floor gives you access to a huge range of equipment — from squat racks and sleds to functional kit and cardio machines. That variety keeps training fresh, challenging, and fun.
  3. Progressive Programming
Our sessions aren’t random. They’re part of a carefully structured plan designed to build strength, fitness, and mobility over time — ensuring consistent improvement.
  4. Supportive, Motivating Atmosphere
Training in a small group gives you energy, accountability, and community — without feeling lost in a crowd.
  5. Cost effective alternative to Personal Training
Personal training will always deliver superior results. But for those whose budgets do not stretch to personal training, our small group service is the next best thing.
