If you’re thinking about starting personal training, one of the most common questions is:
“Should I go for 1:1 personal training or semi-private personal training?”
The truth is—both are excellent options.
At Gymbo’s, we offer:
- Semi-Private Personal Training at Sawston
- 1:1 Personal Training at our boutique Meldreth studio
Both are designed to help you Move Stronger and Live Better, but they suit slightly different people, goals, and preferences.
Let’s break it down so you can decide what’s right for you.
What is 1:1 Personal Training?
1:1 personal training is exactly what it sounds like—you work exclusively with your coach for the full session.
At our Meldreth studio, this is all we do.
Why people choose 1:1 PT
- 100% coach attention, 100% of the time
- Fully personalised programming
- Real-time feedback on every movement
- A quieter, highly focused training environment
It’s particularly well suited if you:
- Have specific goals (e.g. sports performance, events, body composition)
- Are interested in bodybuilding-style training
- Have injuries, medical conditions, or limitations requiring close supervision
- Prefer a private, distraction-free setting
In these cases, we would always recommend 1:1.
But it’s not just for “special cases”
1:1 personal training isn’t just for advanced or specialist clients.
Many people simply choose it because:
- They like the structure of fixed appointments each week
- It’s already in the diary → easier to stay consistent
- They prefer a more private experience
- They want that extra level of accountability and focus
If you want a clear routine and a coach by your side throughout, 1:1 is a fantastic option.
What is Semi-Private Personal Training?
Semi-private personal training (Semi-PT) is delivered at our Sawston facility and offers a slightly different experience.
You’ll train in a session with up to 3 other clients, sharing the coach—but crucially:
Everyone follows their own personalised programme
So while you’re in a small group environment, your training is still tailored specifically to you.
Why people choose Semi-PT
Semi-private training is ideal if you:
- Want expert coaching, but with a more relaxed feel than 1:1
- Enjoy a motivating environment with others around you
- Prefer flexibility in when you train (50+ weekly slots to choose from)
- Want a more cost-effective option without sacrificing quality
You still get:
- A bespoke programme
- Ongoing coaching and support
- Regular progress reviews
But in a setting that feels:
- Less intense
- More social (if you want it to be)
- Easier to fit into a busy schedule

Which one should you choose?
Here’s the honest answer:
There is no “better” option—only what’s better for you
Choose 1:1 if you:
- Need close supervision or specialist programming
- Thrive with structure and routine
- Prefer a private, focused environment
- Want a coach with you every second of the session
Choose Semi-PT if you:
- Want flexibility around your schedule
- Enjoy a slightly more relaxed, social environment
- Still want personalised coaching, just not 100% of the time
- Are looking for a long-term, sustainable training solution
Not sure which is right for you?
That’s completely normal.
The best place to start is with a quick conversation so we can understand:
